Five students from the University of Dubuque football team were driving back to college after Thanksgiving break and found themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere off a busy highway in Illinois, right in the middle of a severe winter storm. They called 911 but Illinois State Police said conditions were too dangerous, and told them to stay in their car and wait for rescue. That’s when a Good Samaritan from Prophetstown named Thomas came to help. He was unable to get them out with a shovel, so they all pitched in and got the car to his garage. Thomas invited all five of them inside for the night, fed them, and after the snowplows came the next morning, they went on their way safely back to college. It’s another random act hero story to be celebrated.
